AI-hallucinated citations warrant sanctions

BEAUMONT, Texas — A federal court in Texas sanctioned an attorney for using artificial intelligence to create a response to a motion for summary judgment, and not verifying the AI-generated content, which cited “nonexistent cases” and “nonexistent quotations.” The attorney must pay a $2,000 penalty and attend a continuing legal education course on the topic of using generative AI in law.
