Burning bicycle

BATON ROUGE — A Louisiana federal court denied Amazon’s request to dismiss a product liability suit brought by the mother of two young children. She says an electric bicycle she bought from the Amazon marketplace “spontaneously combusted” when plugged into an outlet in the living room, “causing multiple fires,” injuries and property damage. The bicycle’s rechargeable 432-watt-hour lithium-ion battery allegedly caused the flames. Though Amazon did not sell the bike to the mother, she adequately alleged that she and her kids were injured “because of Amazon’s negligent performance” of its duty to her and her kids.
