WASHINGTON (CN) – The National Marine Fisheries Service is asking the public to comment on a request by Tetra Tech EC, Inc. to harass marine mammals incidental to the operation of a liquefied natural gas port facility in Massachusetts Bay. The request notes that 13 species of marine mammals could be affected by noise generated from an automatic positioning system that keeps liquid natural gas transport vessels steady while they are filled, by repeatedly positioning the vessel to face into the wind. The 13 species are: the North Atlantic right whale, humpback whale, fin whale, minke whale, long-finned pilot whale, Atlantic white-sided dolphin, bottlenose dolphin, common dolphin, killer whale, Risso’s dolphin, harbor porpoise, harbor seal, and gray seal.
