MUNICH — Adolf Hitler’s handwritten speech notes sold at auction in Germany on Friday, well above their starting prices, to anonymous bidders.

Though Jewish groups said the records could encourage neo-Nazis, the Hermann Historica auction house portrayed them as historically significant.

One 9-page manuscript that fetched the top price of $40,300 was compiled about eight months before the beginning of World War II in 1939. The manuscript outlines a speech Hitler gave to new military officers in Berlin.
