LOS ANGELES (CN) – The former head of the L.A. Sheriff’s Internal Criminal Investigations Bureau pleaded guilty Wednesday to lying on the witness stand in the trial of another sheriff’s officer, a felony. Former sheriff’s Capt. William Thomas Carey faces up to 5 years in federal prison at his Jan. 25, 2016 sentencing. Trial for Carey’s former co-defendant, former Undersheriff Paul Tanaka, is to begin on Nov. 3. Both were charged with obstruction of justice: trying to thwart a federal investigation of corruption and civil rights violations at two downtown jails. Seven other sheriff’s officers have been convicted in the scandal, which contributed to Sheriff Lee Baca’s resignation in January 2014.
