Mail-in ballots in Texas

NEW ORLEANS — The Fifth Circuit reversed a Texas court’s judgment in favor of the U.S. in this voting rights case against the state of Texas. The federal government alleged that Texas’ Election Protection and Integrity Act violates a provision of the Civil Rights Act by requiring voters to provide driver’s license or social security numbers on their mail-in ballot applications. The number-matching requirements are meant to confirm the identity of the voter, and this is material to determining voter eligibility.
