Punch costs officer immunity

DETROIT— An officer who punched a suspect hard enough to rupture his eyeball – causing the man permanent blindness in that eye – is not entitled to qualified immunity, a Michigan federal judge ruled. The man was walking with his co-worker when the officer approached him in response to a call from a neighbor who reported that something didn’t “seem right” about the two men. The officer allegedly had the unarmed man pinned to the ground when he struck the blow.
