JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (CN) – The ACLU challenged a proposed amendment to the Missouri Constitution regarding public prayer. The American Civil Liberties Union asked a Cole County judge to order the ballot summary to be rewritten or to boot the amendment from the ballot. The amendment, scheduled for the 2012 ballot, states that people can pray in public so long as they do not disturb the peace, and that students can express their religious beliefs and cannot be forced to participate in assignments that violate their religious beliefs. The ACLU claims the ballot summary is misleading because it fails to mention that students could use it to refuse to do homework, and that prisoners could lose religious protections of the state constitution.
