Slayer statute blocks benefits

FORT WORTH, Texas — A son who was arrested for the alleged killing of his mother cannot receive death benefits from her life insurance policy, rules a Texas federal court, because honoring the contingent beneficiary’s claim might require the insurer to violate Illinois’ slayer statute prohibiting killers from receiving payouts for their victims. The son failed to respond to the lawsuit, so the insurer wins default judgment.
