Speedy trial rights asserted too late

MADISON, Wis. — The Wisconsin Supreme Courts overturned the appeals court’s finding that an inmate’s speedy trial rights were violated after his trial, for assaulting a corrections officer while incarcerated, was delayed for 46 months. The state did not explain many months of delay between hearings, but the court concludes the delays were largely for neutral reasons and notes the defendant did not assert his speedy trial rights until 32 months after the charges were filed.
