The Citadel to Decide if |Cadet Can Wear Hijab

(CN) – The Citadel, the South Carolina military college in Charleston, is considering a new student’s request that she be allowed to wear her traditional Muslim headscarf to class.     The historic school, founded in 1842, has longstanding uniform requirements for cadets. In short, they are required to be in uniform nearly all of the time.     As far as anyone knows, this is the first time in its history that The Citadel has been asked to make a special religious exception to those rules.     The Citadel declined to identify the student beyond saying that she is an incoming freshman who will begin classes in August.     In a statement provided to Courthouse News, Col. Brett Ashworth, vice president of communications and marketing for The Citadel said “A student who was recently accepted into The Citadel for the fall semester has requested to wear a hijab. The college is reviewing the request at this time.”     A decision on the student’s request is expected to take several weeks.
